Method
 

Preparation
  1. Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C).
  2. Grease and flour your cake pans.
  3. In a mixing bowl, whisk together the all-purpose flour, baking powder, baking soda, and salt until well combined.
Mixing
  1. In a separate large bowl, beat the softened unsalted butter with the sugar until light and fluffy.
  2. Add the eggs one at a time, mixing well after each addition, along with vanilla extract.
  3. Alternate adding the dry ingredients and buttermilk to the creamed mixture, starting and ending with the flour mixture. Mix until just combined.
Baking
  1. Divide the batter evenly between the prepared pans and bake in the preheated oven for 25-30 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean.
Cooling and Decorating
  1. Let the cakes cool in the pans for about 10 minutes before transferring them to wire racks to cool completely.
  2. Once cool, frost with your favorite frosting and add playful decorations.
