Ingredients

For the filling
  • 6 to 8 cups sliced apples (Granny Smith or Honeycrisp) Choose the right variety for the perfect balance of sweetness and tartness.
  • 1 cup granulated sugar
  • 2 tablespoons all-purpose flour
  • 2 teaspoons ground cinnamon
  • 1/4 teaspoon ground nutmeg
  • 1 tablespoon lemon juice Adds brightness to the filling.
  • 1 cup caramel sauce For drizzling over the apples.
  • 1 tablespoon butter, cut into small pieces Adds richness to the filling.
For the crust
  • 1 package refrigerated pie crusts Or use homemade crust if preferred.
  • 1 large egg For egg wash.
  • Coarse sugar For sprinkling on top.

Method

Preparation
  1. Preheat your oven to 425°F (220°C).
  2. In a large bowl, combine the sliced apples, sugar, flour, cinnamon, nutmeg, and lemon juice. Mix until well coated.
  3. Place one pie crust in a 9-inch pie pan, pressing it to fit.
  4. Pour the apple mixture into the crust and drizzle caramel sauce over the apples.
  5. Dot the filling with small pieces of butter.
  6. Cover the pie with the second crust, crimping the edges to seal. Make slits in the crust for steam to escape.
  7. Beat the egg and brush it over the top crust. Sprinkle with coarse sugar.
Baking
  1. Bake in the preheated oven for 25-30 minutes, until the crust is golden brown.
  2. Allow to cool for at least 15 minutes before serving.

Notes

For best results, choose the right apples and allow the pie to cool adequately to set the filling. Serve with whipped cream or extra caramel.
