Method
Preparation
- Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C).
- In a large mixing bowl, combine the flour, granulated sugar, cocoa powder, baking soda, and salt. Stir until mixed well.
- In a medium saucepan over medium heat, bring water and vegetable oil to a boil. Pour the hot mixture over the dry ingredients and mix carefully.
- Once mixed, add eggs and vanilla extract to the batter. Stir until everything is combined.
Baking
- Pour the batter into a greased and floured 13 x 18-inch sheet pan.
- Bake for 20 minutes or until a toothpick inserted in the center comes out clean.
Frosting
- While the cake is baking, prepare the frosting. In a saucepan, melt butter and cocoa powder over medium heat.
- Stir in the milk and bring to a simmer.
- Remove from heat and mix in powdered sugar and vanilla until smooth.
Finishing
- Once the cake has cooled for about 10 minutes, pour the frosting over the top and spread evenly with a spatula. Let it cool completely before slicing.
Notes
Store leftovers in an airtight container at room temperature for up to three days. Refrigerate for longer freshness up to a week, or freeze slices for up to three months.
