Ingredients

Main Ingredients
  • 2 cups whole milk The richer, the better!
  • 2/3 cup granulated sugar For that signature sweetness.
  • 1/4 cup unsalted butter Trust us, it makes everything creamier.
  • 1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract Just a hint for flavor enhancement.

Method

Preparation
  1. In a medium saucepan, mix together the whole milk and granulated sugar. Stir until the sugar is mostly dissolved.
  2. Place the saucepan over medium heat and bring the mixture to just about a simmer, stirring occasionally to ensure the sugar fully incorporates. Don't let it boil!
  3. Once it’s nearing a simmer and the sugar has dissolved, add the unsalted butter. Stir until it’s completely melted and combined.
  4. Reduce the heat to low. Allow the mixture to simmer gently for about 15-20 minutes. Stir it regularly, scraping the bottom of the pan, to prevent any burning and to help thicken it.
  5. Once it has thickened and reduced by about half, remove it from the heat. Stir in the vanilla extract and let it cool down to room temperature. It will thicken more as it cools.
  6. Once cooled, transfer the sweetened condensed milk to a glass jar or an airtight container. Store it in the refrigerator for up to a week.

Notes

Keep stirring to avoid burning. Customize the flavor with almond extract or a pinch of sea salt. If the consistency is too thin, continue simmering until it thickens.
