Preparation
- Rinse the cranberries: Start by rinsing your fresh cranberries under cold water. Remove any that are soft or bruised.
- Combine Ingredients: In a medium saucepan, combine water, sugar, and a pinch of salt. Bring it to a boil over medium-high heat, stirring occasionally until the sugar is dissolved.
- Add the cranberries: Once the sugar mixture is boiling, add the cranberries to the pot.
- Cook: Allow the mixture to continue boiling for about 10 minutes. You’ll notice the cranberries popping and releasing their juices.
- Add the zest: If you’re using orange zest, now is the time to add it in. Stir to incorporate.
- Cool: Remove the saucepan from heat and allow the sauce to cool at room temperature. It will thicken as it cools.
- Serve: Transfer the cranberry sauce to a bowl and serve, or store in the refrigerator for later use.
Notes
If you have extra sauce, store it in a sealed container in the refrigerator for up to a week or freeze it for longer storage. For a smooth sauce, blend it after cooling; for a chunkier texture, mash slightly with a fork.
