Preparation
- In a large skillet over medium-high heat, add your ground beef. Season generously with salt and pepper. Allow it to cook until browned, about 5 minutes.
- Using a spatula, press the beef down flat to create a crispy surface (hence the “smash”!). Cook for an additional 2-3 minutes until crispy and caramelized.
- While the beef is cooking, prepare your bowl ingredients. Start with a generous base of chopped lettuce.
- Once your beef is done, add it on top of the lettuce. Then layer in diced tomatoes, pickles, onions, and shredded cheese.
- Drizzle the mayonnaise or burger sauce over the top. If you’re feeling fancy, you can use a squeeze bottle for extra flair.
- Serve and enjoy! This dish is best enjoyed immediately, but it can easily be refrigerated for later.
Notes
If you'd like a healthier alternative, try ground turkey or plant-based options. Don't overcrowd the pan for perfect caramelization.
