Ingredients

Main Ingredients
  • 1 pound ground beef (or Halal ground chicken, turkey, or plant-based substitute)
  • 1 cup onion, chopped
  • 1 cup bell pepper, diced
  • 1 cup tomato sauce
  • 2 tablespoons brown sugar
  • 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce (ensure Halal)
  • 1 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1 teaspoon onion powder
  • 1 can refrigerated biscuit dough (ensure it’s Halal)
  • 1 cup shredded cheese (Cheddar or a blend)

Method

Preparation
  1. Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C).
  2. In a large skillet over medium heat, add the ground beef with the chopped onions and bell peppers, cooking until browned and vegetables are tender, about 5-7 minutes.
  3. Drain any excess fat, then add tomato sauce, brown sugar, Worcestershire sauce, garlic powder, and onion powder to the skillet, mixing well and simmering on low for about 5 minutes.
  4. In a greased 9x13-inch baking dish, spread the meat mixture evenly.
  5. Cut each biscuit in half and arrange them on top of the meat mixture in a single layer.
  6. Sprinkle shredded cheese generously over the biscuit pieces.
  7. Bake the casserole in the preheated oven for 25-30 minutes, until biscuits are golden brown and cheese is bubbly.
  8. Let cool for a few minutes before serving. Serve with a side salad.

Notes

For lighter versions, use lean turkey or chicken. Plant-based options include crumbled tofu or lentils. Cover with foil for the first 15 minutes of baking to prevent over-browning, then remove to allow browning. Avoid overloading biscuits to ensure even cooking.
