Pastry
  • 1 package refrigerated pie crusts
  • 1 egg beaten egg For egg wash
Filling
  • 4 oz cream cheese, softened
  • 1 cup cooked sausage, crumbled Ensure halal-friendly sausage
  • 1 cup shredded cheddar cheese
  • Salt and pepper to taste
  • Optional: herbs and spices (e.g., chives, paprika)

Method
 

Preparation
  1. Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C).
  2. In a mixing bowl, combine the softened cream cheese, crumbled sausage, and shredded cheddar cheese. Season with salt and pepper, and mix until well blended.
  3. On a lightly floured surface, unroll the refrigerated pie crusts and gently flatten them using a rolling pin.
  4. Cut the pie crust into rectangular or square pieces, about 4x6 inches.
Assembly
  1. Place a generous spoonful of the filling on half of your cut crusts, leaving space around the edges for sealing.
  2. Brush the edges with the beaten egg, then place another piece of dough on top. Press down the edges with a fork to seal.
  3. Brush the tops of the pop tarts with the remaining beaten egg for a golden crust.
Baking
  1. Place the pop tarts on a parchment-lined baking sheet and bake for 20-25 minutes or until golden brown.
  2. Let them cool for a few minutes before serving.

Notes

For perfect results, avoid overfilling the pastries. If using a different filling, ensure it remains halal-friendly. Can be made ahead of time or frozen before baking.
