  • 3 large egg whites Can substitute with aquafaba for a vegan option.
  • 1/2 teaspoon cream of tartar
  • Food coloring (optional) For coloring the icing.

Method

Preparation
  1. Gather all your ingredients and have everything within arm's reach.
  2. In a large mixing bowl, combine powdered sugar, egg whites, and cream of tartar. Mix on low speed until smooth.
  3. Increase the mixer speed to high and beat until stiff peaks form, about 7-10 minutes.
  4. If desired, divide the icing into bowls and add food coloring to achieve your preferred shades.
  5. Use piping bags or small spatulas to apply the icing onto the sugar cookies. Allow the cookies to sit for a few hours to let the icing harden.
  6. Once set, the cookies can be enjoyed or gifted.

Notes

Keep leftover icing in an airtight container in the fridge for up to a week. If icing has cracks, gently fold after beating to smooth it out. Refrigerate cookies in an airtight container at room temperature for best results.
