- Gather all your ingredients and have everything within arm's reach.
- In a large mixing bowl, combine powdered sugar, egg whites, and cream of tartar. Mix on low speed until smooth.
- Increase the mixer speed to high and beat until stiff peaks form, about 7-10 minutes.
- If desired, divide the icing into bowls and add food coloring to achieve your preferred shades.
- Use piping bags or small spatulas to apply the icing onto the sugar cookies. Allow the cookies to sit for a few hours to let the icing harden.
- Once set, the cookies can be enjoyed or gifted.
Notes
Keep leftover icing in an airtight container in the fridge for up to a week. If icing has cracks, gently fold after beating to smooth it out. Refrigerate cookies in an airtight container at room temperature for best results.
