Preparation
- Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C) and grease a baking dish.
- In a mixing bowl, whisk together the flour, baking powder, baking soda, and salt to make the dry mixture.
- In a separate bowl, combine the buttermilk, granulated sugar, egg, cocoa powder, red food coloring, melted butter, and vanilla extract. Mix until smooth.
- Gradually add the dry mixture to the wet mixture, stirring until just combined. Do not overmix; it should resemble a soft dough.
- Roll out the dough on a lightly floured surface into a rectangle, about 1/4 inch thick.
- In a small bowl, mix brown sugar and cinnamon together. Spread the cinnamon-sugar mixture evenly over the rolled-out dough.
- Gently roll the dough from one long side to the other, creating a tight log. Pinch the seam to seal.
- Slice the log into 12 equal pieces and arrange them in your greased baking dish.
Baking
- Bake for 25-30 minutes until lightly browned and fluffy.
Icing
- While the rolls are baking, prepare the icing by beating the cream cheese, powdered sugar, vanilla extract, and milk until smooth.
- Once the rolls are done baking, drizzle the cream cheese icing over the warm rolls and serve immediately.
Notes
To achieve perfect rolls, ensure to roll the dough tightly and pinch the seams well. For storage, keep leftovers in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 3 days or freeze for up to a month.
