  • 4-5 pieces Potatoes (Russet or Yukon Gold) Use starchy potatoes for a creamier texture.
  • 2 cups Heavy cream Can substitute with milk, but texture will be less creamy.
  • 2 cups Cheddar cheese (shredded) Experiment with different cheeses like Gruyère or mozzarella.
  • 2 tablespoons Butter For sautéing garlic.
  • 2 cloves Garlic (minced)
  • 1 teaspoon Salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon Pepper
  • 1/4 teaspoon Nutmeg

Method
 

Preparation
  1. Preheat the oven to 375°F (190°C).
  2. Peel and thinly slice the potatoes.
  3. In a saucepan, melt butter over medium heat and sauté minced garlic.
  4. Add heavy cream, salt, pepper, and nutmeg, and bring to a simmer.
Assembly
  1. Layer the sliced potatoes in a baking dish, pouring the cream mixture over each layer.
  2. Top with shredded cheddar cheese.
Baking
  1. Bake for 45-55 minutes until the potatoes are tender and the top is golden brown.

Notes

Allow cooling slightly before serving. Can be stored in the refrigerator for 3-4 days or frozen. Reheat in the oven or microwave. For added flavor, consider adding cooked bacon or ham.
