Ingredients

Puff Pastry and Filling
  • 1 sheet puff pastry, thawed
  • 1 cup pizza sauce
  • 1 cup shredded mozzarella cheese
  • 1/2 cup halal-friendly pepperoni slices (or substitute with grilled chicken or veggies)
  • 1/4 cup bell peppers, diced
  • 1/4 cup onions, diced
  • 1 large egg, beaten (for egg wash)
  • to taste Italian seasoning

Method

Preparation
  1. Preheat your oven to 400°F (200°C).
  2. On a lightly floured surface, roll out the thawed puff pastry to about 1/8 inch thickness. Cut it into squares or circles, about 4 inches wide.
  3. Place the pastry cutouts onto a baking sheet lined with parchment paper. Spoon a tablespoon of pizza sauce onto the center of each pastry, leaving about 1/2 inch around the edges.
  4. Sprinkle some shredded mozzarella cheese on top of the sauce, then layer with pepperoni slices, bell peppers, and onions.
  5. Brush a little beaten egg around the edges of the pastry. This helps seal the tarts.
  6. Bake for 15-20 minutes, or until they’re golden brown and crispy.
  7. Allow to cool for a minute and then serve while they’re still warm.

Notes

Feel free to swap out the pepperoni for halal-friendly chicken or sautéed mushrooms. Keep an eye on the baking time to avoid over-baking. Store leftovers in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 3 days or freeze for up to a month.
