Ingredients

Main Ingredients
  • 1 pound Ground Beef (80/20 is ideal for flavor)
  • 4 slices Rye Bread (toasted for added crunch)
  • 4 slices Cheddar Cheese (sharp cheddar preferred)
  • 1 medium Onion (sliced thinly)
  • 2 tablespoons Butter (for grilling)
Secret Sauce
  • 2 tablespoons Mayonnaise
  • 1 tablespoon Ketchup
  • 1 tablespoon Relish

Method

Preparation
  1. In a small bowl, mix together the mayonnaise, ketchup, and relish to prepare the secret sauce. Set aside.
  2. In a skillet over medium heat, melt 1 tablespoon of butter. Add the sliced onions and cook, stirring occasionally, until soft and golden brown, about 10 minutes. Remove and set aside.
Cooking
  1. In the same skillet, increase the heat to medium-high. Add the ground beef, seasoning lightly with salt and pepper. Cook until browned, breaking apart with a spatula, around 5-7 minutes. Drain excess fat if necessary.
  2. Spread a thin layer of the secret sauce on one side of each slice of toasted rye. On two slices, place a portion of the cooked ground beef, a slice of cheddar cheese, and cooked onions. Top with remaining rye slices, sauce side down.
  3. Add the remaining tablespoon of butter to the skillet over medium heat. Once melted, carefully place your assembled patty melts in the pan. Grill for about 4-5 minutes on each side, until the bread is golden brown and the cheese has melted.
  4. Slice in half and serve hot with your favorite sides or additional secret sauce.

Notes

For substitutions, ground turkey or chicken can be used as a halal-friendly alternative. Cook onions first to prevent burning while cooking beef. Store leftovers in an airtight container for up to 3 days, or freeze wrapped tightly for up to a month. Reheat in a skillet or air fryer.
