Preparation
- In a small bowl, mix together the mayonnaise, ketchup, and relish to prepare the secret sauce. Set aside.
- In a skillet over medium heat, melt 1 tablespoon of butter. Add the sliced onions and cook, stirring occasionally, until soft and golden brown, about 10 minutes. Remove and set aside.
Cooking
- In the same skillet, increase the heat to medium-high. Add the ground beef, seasoning lightly with salt and pepper. Cook until browned, breaking apart with a spatula, around 5-7 minutes. Drain excess fat if necessary.
- Spread a thin layer of the secret sauce on one side of each slice of toasted rye. On two slices, place a portion of the cooked ground beef, a slice of cheddar cheese, and cooked onions. Top with remaining rye slices, sauce side down.
- Add the remaining tablespoon of butter to the skillet over medium heat. Once melted, carefully place your assembled patty melts in the pan. Grill for about 4-5 minutes on each side, until the bread is golden brown and the cheese has melted.
- Slice in half and serve hot with your favorite sides or additional secret sauce.
Notes
For substitutions, ground turkey or chicken can be used as a halal-friendly alternative. Cook onions first to prevent burning while cooking beef. Store leftovers in an airtight container for up to 3 days, or freeze wrapped tightly for up to a month. Reheat in a skillet or air fryer.
