Preparation
- Lightly grease a 9×13-inch baking dish to prevent sticking.
- Cut the loaf of French bread into bite-sized cubes and distribute them in the baking dish.
- In a large mixing bowl, whisk together the eggs, whole milk, heavy cream, granulated sugar, vanilla extract, almond extract, and salt until well combined.
- Gently pour the egg mixture over the cubed bread, pressing down slightly to ensure absorption.
- Cover the dish with plastic wrap and refrigerate overnight or for at least 4 hours.
Cooking
- Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C).
- Remove the plastic wrap and bake the casserole for about 50 minutes, until golden on top and the custard has set.
- Allow the casserole to cool slightly before serving.
- Sprinkle with powdered sugar and add caramelized sugar on top if desired.
Notes
Use day-old bread for the best texture. Avoid overmixing the custard to maintain creaminess. Store leftovers in an airtight container for up to 3 days.
