Ingredients

Main Ingredients
  • 1 lb fresh fish (such as cod or haddock), cooked and flaked
  • 1 cup bread crumbs
  • 1/4 cup mayonnaise
  • 1 large egg, beaten
  • 2 tablespoons Old Bay seasoning
  • 1/4 cup chopped green onions
  • 1 tablespoon lemon juice
  • to taste Salt and pepper
  • as needed Oil for frying

Method

Preparation
  1. If you haven't done so already, cook your fish until it flakes easily with a fork, around 10 minutes of steaming or pan-searing. Allow it to cool, then flake it into small pieces.
  2. In a large mixing bowl, combine the flaked fish, bread crumbs, mayonnaise, beaten egg, Old Bay seasoning, chopped green onions, lemon juice, salt, and pepper. Stir well to combine until a uniform mixture forms.
  3. Using your hands, take small portions of the mixture and shape them into patties aimed for 2-3 inches in diameter.
  4. In a non-stick skillet, add enough oil over medium heat to coat the bottom of the pan generously.
  5. Once the oil is hot, carefully place the patties into the pan, cooking for 3-4 minutes on each side or until they turn golden brown.
  6. Remove the fish cakes from the pan and place them on a paper towel-lined plate to absorb excess oil. Serve warm with your favorite dipping sauce.

Notes

If using a white fish variant like tilapia or sole for a Halal-friendly option, you can substitute for Old Bay with a mix of celery salt, paprika, and black pepper. Ensure that your mixture is well combined and that the oil is the right temperature before frying to prevent cakes from falling apart.
