Method
Preparation
- Wash the oranges thoroughly. Zest both oranges and set the zest aside. Juice both oranges until you have about 1 cup of juice.
- In a medium saucepan, combine the orange juice, water, and granulated sugar. Stir over medium heat until the sugar has completely dissolved. Bring the mixture to a boil, then reduce the heat.
- Stir in the reserved orange zest and let the mixture simmer for about 10 minutes until it thickens slightly.
Candy Formation
- Remove the saucepan from heat and allow it to cool for several minutes. Once it’s cooled slightly but still pourable, line a baking sheet with parchment paper.
- Pour the mixture onto the parchment and spread it into an even layer.
Drying and Coating
- Let the candy air dry for 24 to 48 hours at room temperature until it’s firm and no longer sticky.
- Once dried, cut the candy into squares or strips and toss them in powdered sugar to coat, preventing them from sticking together.
- Store the candies in an airtight container. Enjoy some yourself or share with friends!
Notes
Use fresh oranges for the best flavor. Adjust syrup thickness for chewier candy. Avoid making on humid days.
