Ingredients

Tofu preparation
  • 1 block firm tofu Can substitute with extra-firm tofu, adjusting the cooking time.
  • 1/4 cup cornstarch Essential for achieving crispy texture.
Cooking ingredients
  • 2 tablespoons olive oil For frying the tofu.
  • 1/4 cup soy sauce Provides savory flavor.
  • 2 tablespoons maple syrup Adds sweetness.
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 teaspoon ginger, grated
  • 1 tablespoon sesame oil For finishing flavor.
  • 2 pieces green onions, sliced For garnish.
  • to taste sesame seeds For garnish.

Method

Preparation
  1. Drain the block of firm tofu and press it to remove excess moisture, wrapping it in a clean kitchen towel and placing a heavy object on top for 10-15 minutes.
  2. Cut the tofu into cubes or rectangles, depending on your preference.
  3. In a bowl, toss the tofu pieces with cornstarch until they are evenly coated.
Cooking
  1. Heat the olive oil in a non-stick skillet over medium-high heat.
  2. Once the oil is hot, carefully add the tofu to the skillet in a single layer. Cook for about 5-7 minutes per side until golden and crispy.
  3. In a small bowl, mix the soy sauce, maple syrup, minced garlic, and grated ginger together until well combined.
  4. Once the tofu is crispy, pour the sauce over it in the skillet and gently toss to coat, allowing it to simmer for another 2-3 minutes.
  5. Drizzle the sesame oil over the tofu, toss in the sliced green onions, and give it one last gentle stir.
  6. Sprinkle sesame seeds on top for garnish and serve hot.

Notes

For extra crispy tofu, cook it in batches to avoid overcrowding the pan. Store leftovers in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to three days. Best reheated in a skillet to maintain crispiness.
