Ingredients

Main Ingredients
  • 4 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1 ¾ cups buttermilk Can substitute with milk mixed with vinegar.

Method

Preparation
  1. Preheat your oven to 425°F (220°C).
  2. In a large mixing bowl, combine the flour, baking soda, and salt. Stir until well mixed.
  3. Make a well in the center of the dry ingredients and pour in the buttermilk. Gently stir with a wooden spoon until a sticky dough forms.
  4. Lightly flour a clean surface and turn the dough out. Knead it gently about 8-10 times until it comes together, being cautious not to over-knead.
  5. Gently form the dough into a round loaf. Place it on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper. Use a sharp knife to make a deep cross on the top of the loaf.
Baking
  1. Bake in the preheated oven for 30-35 minutes or until golden brown. It is done when it sounds hollow when tapped on the bottom.
  2. Let the bread cool on a wire rack for a few minutes before slicing.

Notes

For added flavor, experiment by incorporating raisins, caraway seeds, or herbs. Store the bread in an airtight container at room temperature for up to two days or freeze for up to a month.
