Ingredients

Main ingredients
  • 1 loaf day-old bread (preferably white or whole grain), cut into cubes Use day-old bread for best results.
  • 1 cup chopped onion
  • 1 cup chopped celery
  • 1/2 cup unsalted butter
  • 2 cups vegetable broth Adjust quantity for desired moistness.
  • 1 tablespoon dried sage
  • 1 tablespoon dried thyme
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon black pepper
  • optional chopped parsley or walnuts for garnish Customize as desired.

Method

Preparation
  1. Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C).
  2. Place the cubed bread onto a baking sheet and let it toast lightly in the oven for about 10 minutes, or until just crisped.
Cooking
  1. In a large skillet, melt the butter over medium heat. Add the chopped onion and celery, and sauté until softened, about 4-5 minutes.
  2. In a large bowl, combine the toasted bread cubes with the sautéed vegetables. Stir in the sage, thyme, salt, pepper, and any additional ingredients like nuts if you like.
  3. Gradually pour in the vegetable broth while gently tossing to moisten the bread without making it soggy. Adjust the broth as needed for the right consistency.
  4. Transfer the mixture to a greased 9x13 baking dish, spreading evenly. Bake uncovered for about 30 minutes until the top is golden and crispy.
Serving
  1. Once baked, let it cool for a few minutes before serving. Enjoy the delicious, homemade goodness!

Notes

To enhance flavors, consider using a mix of different breads and don't hesitate to experiment with spices. Store leftovers in an airtight container in the fridge for 3-4 days or freeze for up to a month. Reheat in the oven with broth for moisture.
