Ingredients

Main ingredients
  • 4 cups all-purpose flour
  • 2 1/4 teaspoons active dry yeast
  • 1 1/2 teaspoons salt
  • 2 tablespoons sugar
  • 1 1/2 cups warm water (about 110°F) Make sure the water is not too hot or too cold to ensure yeast activation.
  • 2 tablespoons olive oil

Method

Preparation
  1. In a small bowl, dissolve the sugar in warm water, then sprinkle the yeast on top. Let it sit for about 5-10 minutes until it becomes frothy.
  2. In a large mixing bowl, combine flour and salt. Once mixed, pour in the olive oil and the activated yeast mixture.
  3. Using a wooden spoon or your hands, mix until a dough starts to form. Then, knead the dough on a floured surface for about 8-10 minutes until it’s smooth and elastic.
  4. Place the kneaded dough in a greased bowl, cover it with a cloth, and let it rise in a warm spot for about 1 hour or until it has doubled in size.
  5. After it rises, punch the dough down gently and shape it into a loaf. Place it in a greased 9×5 inch loaf pan.
  6. Cover the shaped loaf and let it rise again for 30-40 minutes. Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C) during this time.
  7. Bake the bread for 30-35 minutes or until the top is golden brown. The bread should sound hollow when tapped.
  8. Let the bread cool in the pan for about 10 minutes before turning it out onto a wire rack. Allow it to cool completely before slicing.

Notes

For a nutty flavor, experiment with half whole wheat flour. Ensure proper rising times and allow cooling to avoid a gummy texture. Store bread wrapped tightly at room temperature for up to 3 days or freeze for up to 3 months.
