Preparation
- In a small bowl, dissolve the sugar in warm water, then sprinkle the yeast on top. Let it sit for about 5-10 minutes until it becomes frothy.
- In a large mixing bowl, combine flour and salt. Once mixed, pour in the olive oil and the activated yeast mixture.
- Using a wooden spoon or your hands, mix until a dough starts to form. Then, knead the dough on a floured surface for about 8-10 minutes until it’s smooth and elastic.
- Place the kneaded dough in a greased bowl, cover it with a cloth, and let it rise in a warm spot for about 1 hour or until it has doubled in size.
- After it rises, punch the dough down gently and shape it into a loaf. Place it in a greased 9×5 inch loaf pan.
- Cover the shaped loaf and let it rise again for 30-40 minutes. Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C) during this time.
- Bake the bread for 30-35 minutes or until the top is golden brown. The bread should sound hollow when tapped.
- Let the bread cool in the pan for about 10 minutes before turning it out onto a wire rack. Allow it to cool completely before slicing.
Notes
For a nutty flavor, experiment with half whole wheat flour. Ensure proper rising times and allow cooling to avoid a gummy texture. Store bread wrapped tightly at room temperature for up to 3 days or freeze for up to 3 months.
