Ingredients

For the pastry
  • 1 cup all-purpose flour
  • 1/4 cup granulated sugar
  • 1/2 cup unsalted butter, chilled and diced
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 1/4 cup milk
For the filling and icing
  • 1/2 cup fruit jam or pastry filling Use your preferred flavor.
  • Powdered sugar for icing (optional)
  • Milk for icing (optional) Add to desired consistency.

Method

Preparation
  1. In a large bowl, mix 1 cup of all-purpose flour, 1/4 cup of granulated sugar, and 1/4 teaspoon of salt.
  2. Add in the diced chilled butter and mix it with your fingers or a pastry cutter until the mixture resembles coarse crumbs.
  3. Slowly pour in 1/4 cup of milk and mix until the dough just comes together. Be careful not to overmix!
  4. Gather the dough into a ball and flatten it into a disc. Wrap it in plastic wrap and chill in the refrigerator for about 15 minutes.
Assembly and Baking
  1. On a floured surface, roll out the chilled dough to about 1/8-inch thickness. Cut the dough into rectangles (about 2x4 inches).
  2. Place a teaspoon of your favorite fruit jam or pastry filling on the center of half of the rectangles, leaving space around the edges.
  3. Top each filled rectangle with another rectangle of dough. Press the edges together with a fork to seal them tight.
  4. Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C). Place the poptarts on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper. Bake for 15-20 minutes until they are golden brown.
  5. If you want to add icing, mix powdered sugar with milk until you reach a desired consistency, then drizzle it over the cooled poptarts.
  6. Serve warm and enjoy these delightful pastries with family and friends!

Notes

For healthier options, consider using whole wheat flour instead of all-purpose and replacing butter with a plant-based margarine. Store poptarts in an airtight container at room temperature for up to 3 days, refrigeration for a week, or freeze for longer storage.
