Ingredients

Gravy Base
  • ¼ cup vegetable oil Can substitute with oil for a Halal-friendly version.
  • ¼ cup all-purpose flour
  • 2 cups milk (whole or 2% for creaminess) Use room temperature milk for a smoother consistency.
  • Salt, to taste
  • Freshly ground black pepper, to taste

Method

Preparation
  1. In a medium skillet over medium heat, add the vegetable oil. Heat until it shimmers, but do not let it smoke.
  2. Sprinkle in the flour. Stir constantly with a whisk to form a roux, cooking until it turns a light golden color. This usually takes about 1 to 2 minutes—don’t rush it!
  3. Gradually pour in the milk while continuing to whisk to combine everything smoothly and prevent lumps.
  4. Continue cooking while whisking for an additional 5 to 7 minutes or until the gravy thickens to your desired consistency.
  5. Season with salt and freshly ground black pepper to taste.
  6. Remove from heat, and your homemade country gravy is ready to serve warm over your favorite dishes!

Notes

To elevate the flavor, consider enhancing your gravy with freshly cracked pepper, chopped herbs, or a sprinkle of cheese. Leftover gravy can be refrigerated for 3 to 4 days or frozen for up to 3 months.
