Ingredients

For the Steaks
  • 1 pound ground beef (halal) Use a mix of lean and fatty beef for best flavor.
  • 1 small onion, finely chopped Adds sweetness to the patties.
  • 1 clove garlic, minced Enhances flavor.
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/4 teaspoon black pepper
  • 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce (halal)
For the Gravy
  • 2 tablespoons olive oil Can adjust for frying patties.
  • 2 cups beef broth (halal) Use low sodium if preferred.
  • 1 tablespoon all-purpose flour Or cornstarch for a gluten-free option.
  • 1 teaspoon onion powder
  • 1 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1/4 teaspoon paprika
  • 1/2 teaspoon dried herbs (such as thyme or parsley) Can use a mix of herbs.

Method

Preparation
  1. In a medium bowl, mix the ground beef, finely chopped onion, minced garlic, salt, pepper, and Worcestershire sauce. Form the mixture into thick patties.
Cooking the Patties
  1. Heat olive oil in a large skillet over medium-high heat. Add the patties and cook for about 4-5 minutes on each side, or until golden brown and cooked to your desired doneness. Remove from the pan and set aside.
Making the Gravy
  1. In the same skillet, add another tablespoon of olive oil if needed. Sprinkle the flour over the oil, stirring constantly for about a minute to create a roux.
  2. Gradually whisk in the beef broth, continuously stirring to avoid lumps. Add in the onion powder, garlic powder, paprika, and dried herbs. Let it simmer for 2-3 minutes until the gravy thickens.
Combine and Serve
  1. Return the hamburger patties to the gravy, ensuring they’re well coated. Let them simmer on low heat for an additional 5 minutes, allowing the flavors to meld together.
  2. Spoon the gravy over the hamburger steaks when serving. Garnish with freshly chopped parsley if desired.

Notes

For lighter options, sub ground turkey or chicken; ensure they are halal. Let steaks rest at room temperature for 10-15 minutes before cooking. Be patient with the gravy to achieve the best flavor.
