Ingredients

For the filling
  • 1 cup dried figs, chopped Use soft dried figs for best results.
  • 1/4 cup water For soaking the figs.
For the dough
  • 1/2 cup whole wheat flour Can substitute with all-purpose flour if desired.
  • 1/4 cup rolled oats Use gluten-free oats for a gluten-free option.
  • 1/4 cup almond flour Can substitute with other nut flours.
  • 1/4 cup honey or maple syrup Adjust sweetness to taste.
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt Enhances flavor.
  • 1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon Adds warmth and depth of flavor.

Method

Preparation
  1. Start by placing the chopped dried figs in a bowl.
  2. Add 1/4 cup of water to the bowl and allow the figs to soak for about 5-10 minutes until they soften.
  3. In another bowl, mix together the whole wheat flour, rolled oats, almond flour, salt, and ground cinnamon.
  4. Once the figs have softened, mash them with a fork or blend them to form a paste. Add the honey (or maple syrup) and mix well.
  5. Gradually add the dry mixture to the fig paste until it forms a dough. Make sure it is well-combined but don’t overmix.
Shaping
  1. Lightly flour a clean surface and roll out the dough into a rectangle, approximately 1/4 inch thick.
  2. Cut into smaller rectangles or squares.
  3. Carefully roll each piece up from the shorter side to form a log shape and place it seam side down on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper.
Baking
  1. Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C) and bake the rolls for about 15-20 minutes, or until they are lightly golden brown.
  2. Let them cool on a wire rack before devouring these delicious rolls.

Notes

For substitutions, you can swap almond flour for any nut flour or coconut flour for a nut-free version. Allowing the dough to rest for 10 minutes can enhance flavor. Avoid overmixing the dough to prevent tougher rolls.
