Preparation
- In a large bowl, combine the ground beef, chopped onion, garlic, Worcestershire sauce, salt, pepper, and breadcrumbs (if using). Mix just until combined—don’t overwork the meat!
- Divide the mixture into four equal portions and shape them into oval or round patties, about ½ inch thick.
Cooking
- In a skillet, heat the cooking oil over medium-high heat.
- Once the oil is hot, add the patties to the skillet and cook for about 4-5 minutes on each side, or until they are browned and cooked through.
- Remove the patties from the skillet and set aside. In the same skillet, lower the heat and sprinkle in the flour. Stir for about one minute until golden.
- Gradually whisk in the beef broth, scraping the bottom of the skillet to release any drippings.
- Bring the gravy to a simmer, allowing it to thicken for about 5-7 minutes. If desired, add thyme or other herbs to enhance flavor.
- Return the patties to the skillet and coat them with the gravy. Cook for an additional 2 minutes before serving.
Notes
Store leftovers in an airtight container in the refrigerator for 3-4 days. Reheat in the microwave or in a skillet with a little gravy to keep them moist.
