Ingredients

For the Donuts
  • 1 cup all-purpose flour Ensure it's Halal-compliant.
  • 1/4 cup granulated sugar
  • 1/2 teaspoon baking powder
  • 1/4 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 cup buttermilk Ensure it's Halal-compliant.
  • 1 large egg
  • 2 tablespoons melted butter
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
For the Glaze
  • 1 cup powdered sugar
  • 2 tablespoons milk
  • 1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract For glaze.

Method

Preparation
  1. In a large mixing bowl, combine all-purpose flour, sugar, baking powder, baking soda, and salt. Whisk to combine.
  2. In a separate bowl, whisk together buttermilk, egg, melted butter, and vanilla extract. Pour the wet ingredients into the dry ones and mix until just combined. Be careful not to over-mix!
  3. Lightly flour your hands and the counter. Shape the dough into a log, about 1-inch thick. Cut out donut shapes using a donut cutter or two round cookie cutters. Alternatively, cut squares for a more rustic look.
  4. Preheat your air fryer at 350°F (175°C) for about 5 minutes.
Cooking
  1. Lightly spray the air fryer basket with cooking spray. Place the shaped donuts in a single layer. Air fry for about 5-7 minutes until golden brown.
Glazing
  1. While the donuts cool, prepare the glaze by whisking together powdered sugar, milk, and vanilla extract in a medium bowl until smooth.
  2. Dip each donut into the glaze, allowing excess to drip off, and place on a wire rack to set before enjoying.

Notes

If you don’t have buttermilk, combine milk with a teaspoon of lemon juice or vinegar and let it sit for 5 minutes. Avoid over-mixing the dough to prevent dense donuts. Store leftovers in an airtight container for up to two days at room temperature or refrigerate for up to a week. For longer storage, freeze in a container layered with parchment paper for about a month. Reheat in air fryer at 300°F (150°C) for 2-3 minutes.
