Ingredients

Main Ingredients
  • 1 lb ground beef (preferably halal)
  • 1 tablespoon vegetable oil
  • 3 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 tablespoon ginger, freshly grated
  • 1/4 cup soy sauce low-sodium is a great option
  • 2 tablespoons brown sugar
  • 1 tablespoon sesame oil
  • 1/2 teaspoon black pepper
  • 2 cups cooked rice jasmine or short-grain are perfect
  • 2 green onions sliced for garnish
  • 1 tablespoon sesame seeds optional, for garnish
Optional Toppings
  • shredded carrots
  • bok choy
  • cucumber slices
  • baby spinach

Method

Preparation
  1. In a large skillet or frying pan, heat the vegetable oil over medium-high heat until it shimmers but does not smoke.
  2. Add the minced garlic and grated ginger to the pan and cook for about 1-2 minutes until fragrant and lightly golden.
  3. Increase the heat to high and add the ground beef, breaking it apart with a spatula as it cooks. Cook for about 5-7 minutes until browned evenly.
  4. Once browned, drain any excess fat if necessary and reduce the heat to medium. Stir in the soy sauce, brown sugar, sesame oil, and black pepper, and cook for 2-3 more minutes.
  5. Spoon the beef mixture over cooked rice in individual bowls.
  6. Garnish with sliced green onions and optional sesame seeds.

Notes

Store leftovers in an airtight container for 3-4 days. Reheat in the microwave or on the stove with a splash of water or broth for best results.
