Ingredients

Burger Ingredients
  • 1 lb ground beef Aim for an 80/20 lean-to-fat ratio for juiciness.
  • 1 tsp salt
  • 1/2 tsp black pepper
  • 1/2 tsp garlic powder
  • 1/2 tsp onion powder
  • 4 pieces burger buns Toast if desired.
  • Lettuce Lettuce For topping.
  • Tomato slices Tomato slices For topping.
  • Cheese slices Cheese slices (optional) Add during the last minute of cooking.
  • Condiments Condiments (ketchup, mustard, etc.) For serving.

Method

Preparation
  1. In a mixing bowl, combine the ground beef with salt, black pepper, garlic powder, and onion powder. Use your hands to gently mix the spices into the meat, taking care not to overwork it.
  2. Divide the beef mixture into four equal sections. Shape each section into a burger patty, about 3/4 inches thick, making a small indentation in the center of each patty to prevent puffing up while cooking.
Cooking
  1. Preheat a grill or cast iron skillet over medium-high heat. If using a skillet, lightly grease the surface with a bit of oil to prevent sticking.
  2. Place the patties on the grill or skillet. Cook for 4-5 minutes on one side. Flip them over, and cook for an additional 4-5 minutes for medium doneness. Optionally, add a slice of cheese on top of each patty during the last minute to melt.
Assembly
  1. Toast the burger buns slightly, if desired. Place the cooked patties on the bottom half of the buns. Add lettuce, tomato slices, and your favorite condiments. Top with the other half of the bun and enjoy.
