Ingredients

Filling Ingredients
  • 1 lb beef steak, thinly sliced Choose a tender cut like top sirloin or flank steak.
  • 2 cups beef broth For added flavor.
  • 1 cup shredded cheese Swiss or cheddar works well.
  • 1 medium onion, finely chopped
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • to taste salt and pepper
  • optional fresh herbs for garnish
Pastry Ingredients
  • 1 package pastry dough, store-bought

Method

Preparation
  1. Preheat your oven to 400°F (200°C).
  2. In a skillet over medium heat, sauté the chopped onion and minced garlic until translucent.
  3. Add the sliced beef and season with salt and pepper. Cook until the beef is browned, about 5-7 minutes.
  4. Pour in the beef broth, bringing the mixture to a simmer. Allow it to thicken slightly for about 10 minutes, then remove from heat.
  5. On a floured surface, roll out your pastry dough. Cut it into squares, ensuring each piece is large enough to wrap around the beef filling.
  6. Place a spoonful of the beef mixture in the center of each pastry square, top with cheese, fold the pastry to create a triangle, and pinch edges to seal.
Baking
  1. Transfer the filled squares to a baking sheet lined with parchment paper and bake for about 20-25 minutes, or until golden brown.
  2. Remove from the oven and allow them to cool slightly. Serve warm with a side of au jus for dipping.

Notes

To ensure perfect squares, allow the broth to thicken properly and consider preparing the filling in advance for convenience. If you have leftovers, store them in an airtight container in the fridge for up to 3 days.
