Preparation
- Prepare the tortillas by cutting large ones into halves or quarters.
- In a large skillet, pour enough vegetable oil to cover the bottom (approximately 1/2 inch deep) and heat it over medium-high heat.
Cooking
- Once the oil is hot, carefully add the tortillas one at a time and fry for about 1-2 minutes on each side or until golden and crispy.
- Use tongs to flip the tortillas.
- Place the fried tortillas on a paper towel-lined plate to drain excess oil.
Assembly
- Spread a layer of refried beans over each crispy tortilla.
- Add toppings such as tomatoes, lettuce, cheese, jalapeƱos, avocado, and salsa.
- Serve immediately and let everyone build their own chalupa creations.
Notes
To enhance your chalupas, use oils with a high smoke point for frying, ensure the oil is hot enough to maintain crunch, and feel free to customize your toppings for a unique twist. Store leftover chalupa shells separately from toppings in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 3 days.
