Preparation
- Start by draining and rinsing the can of chickpeas. Once rinsed, use the back of a fork to mash them lightly in a mixing bowl.
- Add the breadcrumbs, chopped onion, minced garlic, parsley, cumin, paprika, salt, and pepper to the bowl with the mashed chickpeas. Stir until all ingredients are combined well.
- With clean hands, take small amounts of the mixture and form them into small patties or balls, roughly the size of a golf ball.
- In a large frying pan, add enough oil to cover the bottom. Heat the oil over medium heat until it's hot but not smoking (around 350°F or 180°C).
- Carefully add the chickpea fritters to the pan in batches, making sure not to overcrowd the pan. Fry for about 4-5 minutes on each side or until they are golden brown and crispy.
- Once cooked, transfer them to a paper towel-lined plate to drain any excess oil. Serve hot with your favorite dipping sauce or as part of a larger meal.
Notes
Store leftovers in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to three days. For longer storage, freeze the fritters in a single layer on a baking sheet until firm, then transfer to a freezer-safe bag. Reheat in the oven at 375°F (190°C) for 10-15 minutes or in an air fryer.
