Preparation
- In a mixing bowl, mash the drained and rinsed chickpeas with a fork or potato masher until they’re mostly smooth but still have some texture.
- Add in the breadcrumbs, chopped onion, minced garlic, parsley, cumin, paprika, salt, and pepper into the chickpea mash. Stir until well combined.
- Using your hands, shape the mixture into small patties or fritters, making sure they hold together well. You should get about 8-10 fritters depending on the size.
- In a large frying pan, add enough oil to cover the bottom of the pan. Heat the oil over medium heat until it shimmers.
- Carefully place the fritters in the hot oil, leaving enough space between them to fry evenly. Fry for 3-4 minutes on each side or until golden brown and crispy.
- Once cooked, transfer the fritters to a paper towel-lined plate to absorb excess oil.
- Serve them warm with your favorite dipping sauce, such as tahini or a yogurt-based dip.
Notes
For best results, ensure chickpeas are well-drained. To keep fritters crispy, reheat in the oven rather than the microwave. Can substitute breadcrumbs for gluten-free options.
