Ingredients

Dough Ingredients
  • 2 cups all-purpose flour Make sure it's fresh for the best flavor.
  • 1 teaspoon sugar Helps activate the yeast.
  • 1 packet active dry yeast (2 ¼ teaspoons) Ensure it's fresh for best results.
  • ¾ cup warm water (110°F or 43°C) Water should be warm, not hot.
  • 1 teaspoon salt Enhances the flavor.
  • 2 tablespoons unsalted butter (melted, plus extra for brushing) For buttery flavor.
  • 1 teaspoon garlic powder Adds savory flavor.
  • 1 teaspoon Italian seasoning Herbs enhance the taste.
  • ½ cup grated Parmesan cheese (optional) For an extra flavor boost.

Method

Preparation
  1. In a small bowl, combine warm water and sugar. Stir in the yeast and let it sit for about 5-10 minutes until it becomes frothy.
  2. In a larger mixing bowl, combine flour and salt. Pour in the yeast mixture along with melted butter. Stir until a soft dough forms. Knead with a stand mixer for about 5 minutes until smooth.
  3. Lightly oil a bowl, place the dough inside, cover with a clean cloth, and let it rise in a warm place for about 30 minutes or until doubled in size.
  4. Once risen, punch down the dough and turn it out onto a floured surface. Roll it into a rectangle about ½ inch thick. Cut the dough into strips (about 1 inch wide).
  5. Preheat your oven to 425°F (220°C). Place the breadsticks on a greased baking sheet. Combine melted butter with garlic powder and Italian seasoning. Brush this mixture over the dough strips.
  6. Bake in the preheated oven for about 12-15 minutes, or until they are golden brown.
  7. Remove from the oven and serve warm! Optionally, top with Parmesan cheese for an extra flavor boost.

Notes

For substitutions, consider adding rosemary or thyme instead of Italian seasoning. For a healthier version, use half whole wheat flour. Avoid over-kneading the dough to ensure tender breadsticks. Store in an airtight container at room temperature for up to 2 days, or freeze for up to 3 months. Reheat in the oven at 350°F (175°C) for 5-7 minutes.
