Preparation
- In a small bowl, combine warm water and sugar. Stir in the yeast and let it sit for about 5-10 minutes until it becomes frothy.
- In a larger mixing bowl, combine flour and salt. Pour in the yeast mixture along with melted butter. Stir until a soft dough forms. Knead with a stand mixer for about 5 minutes until smooth.
- Lightly oil a bowl, place the dough inside, cover with a clean cloth, and let it rise in a warm place for about 30 minutes or until doubled in size.
- Once risen, punch down the dough and turn it out onto a floured surface. Roll it into a rectangle about ½ inch thick. Cut the dough into strips (about 1 inch wide).
- Preheat your oven to 425°F (220°C). Place the breadsticks on a greased baking sheet. Combine melted butter with garlic powder and Italian seasoning. Brush this mixture over the dough strips.
- Bake in the preheated oven for about 12-15 minutes, or until they are golden brown.
- Remove from the oven and serve warm! Optionally, top with Parmesan cheese for an extra flavor boost.
Notes
For substitutions, consider adding rosemary or thyme instead of Italian seasoning. For a healthier version, use half whole wheat flour. Avoid over-kneading the dough to ensure tender breadsticks. Store in an airtight container at room temperature for up to 2 days, or freeze for up to 3 months. Reheat in the oven at 350°F (175°C) for 5-7 minutes.
