Ingredients

For the dough
  • 4 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1/4 cup sugar
  • 1 tablespoon salt
  • 1 tablespoon instant yeast
  • 1 1/2 cups warm water Water should be warm to activate yeast.
  • 1/4 cup melted butter
For topping
  • 1/2 teaspoon garlic salt
  • 1/4 cup grated Parmesan cheese
  • extra as needed melted butter for brushing

Method

Preparation
  1. In a large mixing bowl, combine 4 cups of all-purpose flour, 1/4 cup of sugar, 1 tablespoon of salt, and 1 tablespoon of instant yeast. Mix these dry ingredients well.
  2. Gradually, add 1 1/2 cups of warm water and 1/4 cup of melted butter to the dry mixture. Stir until combined.
  3. Transfer the dough to a floured surface and knead for about 5-7 minutes until it becomes smooth and elastic.
  4. Place your dough in a greased bowl, cover it with a clean kitchen towel, and let it rise in a warm place for about 1 hour, or until it doubles in size.
Shaping and Baking
  1. Once risen, punch down the dough and divide it into equal portions (about 12-15 pieces). Roll each piece into a long breadstick shape (about 6-8 inches long).
  2. Place the breadsticks on a greased baking sheet, cover them lightly, and let them rise for another 15-20 minutes.
  3. Preheat your oven to 400°F (200°C). Once preheated, bake the breadsticks for about 12-15 minutes or until golden brown.
  4. While still warm, brush the breadsticks with melted butter, sprinkle with garlic salt, and finish with grated Parmesan cheese.
  5. Allow to cool slightly, and enjoy them warm as a delicious side to any meal.

Notes

Avoid overworking the dough after the first rise as it can lead to dense breadsticks. Consider using plant-based butter for halal-friendly options. Store in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 3 days or freeze for up to 2 months. To reheat, warm in the oven at 350°F (175°C) for about 10 minutes.
