Ingredients

Dry Ingredients
  • 3 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1/4 cup sugar Divided into two portions
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1 packet (2 1/4 tsp) instant yeast
Wet Ingredients
  • 1 cup sweetened condensed milk
  • 1/2 cup warm milk (dairy or non-dairy)
  • 1/4 cup unsalted butter or margarine Melted
  • 1 each egg Optional, for egg wash

Method

Preparation
  1. In a small bowl, mix the warm milk with the instant yeast and a teaspoon of sugar. Allow it to sit for about 5-10 minutes until foamy.
  2. In a large mixing bowl, combine the flour, remaining sugar, and salt.
  3. Create a well in the dry ingredients and pour in the sweetened condensed milk, activated yeast mixture, and melted butter (or margarine).
  4. Mix everything until you get a soft dough. Knead on a floured surface for about 8-10 minutes until smooth and elastic.
  5. Place the dough in a greased bowl, cover it with a clean cloth, and let it rise in a warm place until it doubles in size, approximately 1-2 hours.
Shaping and Baking
  1. Once the dough has risen, punch it down and knead it briefly. Shape it into a loaf and place in a greased bread pan.
  2. Cover again and let it rise for another 30 minutes or until it bounces back when lightly poked.
  3. While the dough rises, preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C).
  4. If using an egg wash, beat the egg and brush it over the top of your loaf. Bake for 25-30 minutes or until golden brown and cooked through.
  5. Once done, allow it to cool in the pan for a few minutes before transferring to a wire rack.

Notes

Store leftover bread in an airtight container for up to 3 days at room temperature or refrigerate for a week. Freeze for up to 3 months. To refresh, thaw and reheat in the oven at 350°F (175°C) for about 10 minutes.
