Ingredients

Dry Ingredients
  • 2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 tablespoon baking powder
  • 1/4 cup sugar
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
Wet Ingredients
  • 1/4 cup unsalted butter, cold and cubed Ensure the butter is cold for best texture.
  • 3/4 cup milk Feel free to use alternative milk options.
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1 egg (optional, for egg wash)

Method

Preparation
  1. Preheat your oven to 400°F (200°C) and line a baking sheet with parchment paper.
  2. In a large mixing bowl, whisk together the flour, baking powder, sugar, and salt.
  3. Add the cubed cold butter and blend until it resembles coarse crumbs.
  4. Pour in the milk and vanilla extract, mixing until the dough just comes together. Avoid over-kneading.
  5. Turn the dough onto a floured surface and pat it into a 1-inch thick round. Cut into wedges or use a round cutter.
  6. If using, beat the egg and brush it over the tops of the scones.
Baking
  1. Place the scones on the prepared baking sheet and bake for 15-20 minutes or until golden brown.
  2. Let them cool on a wire rack for a few minutes before serving.

Notes

For lighter scones, substitute half of the flour with whole wheat flour. Shape can be varied for fun presentation.
