Ingredients

Dry Ingredients
  • 1 ¾ cups all-purpose flour Make sure all your ingredients are fresh for the best flavor!
  • 1 cup granulated sugar
  • 1/3 cup unsweetened cocoa powder
  • 1 teaspoon baking soda
  • ½ teaspoon salt
Wet Ingredients
  • 1 cup warm water
  • 1/3 cup vegetable oil
  • 1 tablespoon white vinegar
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
Optional Ingredients
  • ½ cup chocolate chips optional, but highly recommended

Method

Preparation
  1. Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C) and grease a 9-inch round cake pan.
  2. In a large mixing bowl, combine the flour, granulated sugar, cocoa powder, baking soda, and salt. Whisk together until thoroughly blended.
  3. In a separate bowl, mix the warm water, vegetable oil, vinegar, and vanilla extract. Pour the wet mixture into the dry ingredients.
  4. Stir the mixture until it’s well combined, being careful not to over-mix. If you’re using chocolate chips, gently fold them in now.
Baking
  1. Pour the batter into the prepared cake pan and smooth out the top with a spatula. Bake for 30-35 minutes or until a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean.
  2. Once baked, let the cake cool in the pan for 10 minutes, then transfer it to a wire rack to cool completely.
  3. Serve warm or at room temperature.

Notes

For a fun twist, try swapping in a dairy-free milk alternative for the water. Keep an eye on your cake during the last few minutes of baking to avoid over-baking. Avoid over-mixing the batter for a light texture.
