Preparation
- Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C) and grease a 9-inch round cake pan.
- In a large mixing bowl, combine the flour, granulated sugar, cocoa powder, baking soda, and salt. Whisk together until thoroughly blended.
- In a separate bowl, mix the warm water, vegetable oil, vinegar, and vanilla extract. Pour the wet mixture into the dry ingredients.
- Stir the mixture until it’s well combined, being careful not to over-mix. If you’re using chocolate chips, gently fold them in now.
Baking
- Pour the batter into the prepared cake pan and smooth out the top with a spatula. Bake for 30-35 minutes or until a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean.
- Once baked, let the cake cool in the pan for 10 minutes, then transfer it to a wire rack to cool completely.
- Serve warm or at room temperature.
Notes
For a fun twist, try swapping in a dairy-free milk alternative for the water. Keep an eye on your cake during the last few minutes of baking to avoid over-baking. Avoid over-mixing the batter for a light texture.
