Ingredients

For the filling
  • 1 cup apple butter Ensure it's suitable for your dietary needs.
  • 1/2 cup caramel sauce
For the crust
  • 1 cup all-purpose flour
  • 1/2 cup rolled oats Quick oats can be substituted for a similar texture.
  • 1/2 cup brown sugar
  • 1/2 teaspoon baking powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 cup butter, softened Use butter for best flavor.
  • 1/2 cup chopped nuts Optional, skip for a nut-free version.
  • 1/2 teaspoon cinnamon

Method

Preparation
  1. Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C) and grease a square baking pan with butter or line it with parchment paper.
  2. In a bowl, combine the flour, rolled oats, brown sugar, baking powder, baking soda, salt, and cinnamon. Stir until well incorporated.
  3. In a separate bowl, cream together the softened butter and the dry mixture until crumbly.
  4. Take about one cup of this mixture and set it aside. Press the remaining mixture firmly into the prepared baking pan to form the crust.
  5. Evenly spread the apple butter over the crust, then drizzle the caramel sauce generously on top.
  6. Sprinkle the reserved crust over the caramel and apple butter layer, adding any optional chopped nuts on top.
Baking
  1. Bake in the preheated oven for about 25-30 minutes or until the top is golden and the caramel is bubbly.
  2. Allow the bars to cool in the pan before cutting them into squares.

Notes

For perfect bars, don't overbake and allow them to cool for at least 15-20 minutes before cutting.
