Ingredients

For the crust and filling
  • 1 cup unsalted butter, softened Ensure butter is softened for easy mixing.
  • 1 cup granulated sugar
  • 2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon baking powder
  • 1 can cherry pie filling Use Halal-friendly filling.
  • to taste Powdered sugar for dusting Optional, for presentation.

Method

Preparation
  1. Preheat the Oven: Set your oven to 350°F (175°C) and grease a 9x13-inch baking dish.
  2. Mix the Dough: In a large mixing bowl, cream together the softened unsalted butter and granulated sugar until light and fluffy. This should take about 3-4 minutes.
  3. Combine Dry Ingredients: In another bowl, whisk together the all-purpose flour, salt, and baking powder. Gradually add this to the creamed butter and sugar mixture until it forms a soft dough.
  4. Prepare the Base Layer: Press 2/3 of the dough evenly into the prepared baking dish to form the bottom crust.
  5. Add the Cherry Filling: Spoon the cherry pie filling over the crust, spreading it evenly.
  6. Top It Off: Crumble the remaining dough over the cherry filling, covering it partially for that rustic look.
  7. Bake: Place it in the preheated oven and bake for about 30-35 minutes, or until the top is golden brown.
  8. Cool & Serve: Allow the bars to cool completely before dusting them with powdered sugar, if desired, and cutting them into squares.

Notes

Keep an eye on the bars as they bake to prevent over-browning. Consider sprinkling chopped nuts on top before baking for added texture. These bars can be enjoyed warm or at room temperature.
