  • 1 loaf French bread, cut into cubes Use day-old bread for the best texture.
  • 2 cups fresh blueberries Frozen blueberries can be used if needed.
  • 6 large eggs Large eggs for best results.
  • 2 cups milk
  • 1 cup heavy cream
  • 1/2 cup granulated sugar Adjust based on the sweetness of blueberries.
  • 1 tablespoon vanilla extract
  • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
Optional Toppings
  • maple syrup For drizzling.
  • powdered sugar For sprinkling.
  • whipped cream For serving.

Method
 

Preparation
  1. Cut the French bread into one-inch cubes.
  2. In a large mixing bowl, whisk together the eggs, milk, heavy cream, sugar, vanilla extract, cinnamon, and salt until fully blended.
  3. Carefully fold in the fresh blueberries.
  4. In a greased 9x13 inch baking dish, layer the bread cubes and pour the custard mixture over the top, ensuring all bread pieces are submerged.
  5. Cover with plastic wrap and refrigerate for at least 2 hours or overnight.
Baking
  1. Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C).
  2. Remove the casserole from the fridge and bake for 35-40 minutes until golden brown and set in the middle.
Serving
  1. Allow to cool for a few minutes before serving. Drizzle with maple syrup or sprinkle with powdered sugar.

Notes

You can freeze individual portions wrapped in plastic, then foil, for up to a month. Reheat as needed. Use zest from lemon or orange in the custard for added flavor.
