Ingredients

For the filling
  • 1 pound ground beef Use Halal-certified
  • 1 cup cheddar cheese, shredded
  • 1/2 cup onion, diced
  • 1 tablespoon ketchup
  • 1 tablespoon mustard
  • to taste Salt and pepper
For the pastry
  • 1 package puff pastry sheets
  • 1 egg beaten For egg wash

Method

Preparation
  1. Preheat your oven to 400°F (200°C) to ensure the puff pastry gets a lovely golden color.
  2. In a skillet over medium heat, add the ground beef and diced onion. Season with salt and pepper and cook until browned and onions are soft, about 5-7 minutes.
  3. Drain excess grease, add ketchup and mustard to the skillet, stir to combine, then mix in shredded cheese, allowing it to melt slightly.
Assembly
  1. Roll out puff pastry sheets on a floured surface, cut into approximately 3x3 inch squares.
  2. Place a spoonful of the beef mixture in the center of each square. Brush edges with beaten egg and fold to create a triangle or rectangle, pressing firmly to seal.
  3. Crimp the edges with a fork for decoration.
Baking
  1. Place the assembled bites on a lined baking sheet, brush tops with egg wash, and bake for 20-25 minutes until golden brown.
  2. Let them cool for a few minutes before serving. Best enjoyed warm!

Notes

For a leaner alternative, use ground chicken or turkey. You can prepare the beef mixture a day in advance to save time. Avoid overfilling pastries to prevent them from bursting during baking.
