Ingredients
  

For the crust
  • 2 1/2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 cup unsalted butter, softened Can substitute with dairy-free options like coconut oil
  • 1/2 cup granulated sugar
  • 1/2 cup brown sugar, packed
  • 1 large egg
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1 teaspoon baking powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
For the apple filling
  • 4 cups apples, peeled and sliced (Granny Smith or Fuji) A mix of sweet and tart apples is recommended for flavor
  • 1 tablespoon lemon juice Keeps apples fresh and bright
  • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 1/4 teaspoon nutmeg
  • 2 tablespoons granulated sugar For topping

Method
 

Preparation
  1. Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C).
  2. Cream together the softened butter, granulated sugar, and brown sugar until smooth.
  3. Add the egg and vanilla extract, then mix well.
  4. In a separate bowl, whisk together the flour, baking powder, and salt. Gradually add this to the wet mixture until a dough forms.
  5. Toss the sliced apples with lemon juice, cinnamon, and nutmeg in another bowl.
Assembly & Baking
  1. Press about 2/3 of the dough into the bottom of a greased 9x13-inch baking dish.
  2. Spread the prepared apples evenly over the crust. Crumble the remaining dough over the apple filling.
  3. Bake for approximately 35-40 minutes, or until the top is golden brown and the apples are bubbling.
  4. Allow the bars to cool slightly before slicing.

Notes

Store in an airtight container in the refrigerator for 3-4 days or freeze for longer storage. Reheat in the oven at 350°F (175°C) for 10-15 minutes.
