Ingredients

Dry Ingredients
  • 2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1/2 cup granulated sugar
  • 1 tablespoon baking powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
Wet Ingredients and Add-ins
  • 1/2 cup cold unsalted butter, cut into cubes Should be cold for flaky texture.
  • 1 cup diced apples (peeled and cored)
  • 1/2 cup milk
  • 1 large egg
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
Maple Glaze
  • 1 cup powdered sugar
  • 2 tablespoons maple syrup
  • 1-2 tablespoons milk (for glaze)

Method

Preparation
  1. Preheat your oven to 400°F (200°C) and line a baking sheet with parchment paper.
  2. In a large bowl, whisk together the flour, granulated sugar, baking powder, and salt until combined.
  3. Add the cold, cubed butter into the flour mixture. Using a pastry cutter or your hands, mix until the mixture resembles coarse crumbs.
  4. Gently fold in the diced apples.
  5. In another bowl, whisk the milk, egg, and vanilla extract together until well combined.
  6. Gradually add the wet ingredients to the dry mixture and stir until just combined; be careful not to over-mix.
  7. Transfer the dough to a floured surface and gently knead a couple of times. Pat it into a circle about 1 inch thick and cut it into wedges.
Baking
  1. Place the scone wedges onto the prepared baking sheet, spacing them apart. Bake for approximately 15-20 minutes, or until golden brown.
Glazing
  1. While the scones are cooling, whisk together powdered sugar, maple syrup, and 1-2 tablespoons of milk until smooth.
  2. Drizzle the maple glaze over the cooled scones.

Notes

Store in an airtight container at room temperature for up to 2 days. Unbaked scones can be frozen for up to a month. Bake from frozen, adding a couple of extra minutes to the baking time.
