Preparation
- Preheat your oven to 400°F (200°C) and line a baking sheet with parchment paper.
- In a large bowl, whisk together the flour, granulated sugar, baking powder, and salt until combined.
- Add the cold, cubed butter into the flour mixture. Using a pastry cutter or your hands, mix until the mixture resembles coarse crumbs.
- Gently fold in the diced apples.
- In another bowl, whisk the milk, egg, and vanilla extract together until well combined.
- Gradually add the wet ingredients to the dry mixture and stir until just combined; be careful not to over-mix.
- Transfer the dough to a floured surface and gently knead a couple of times. Pat it into a circle about 1 inch thick and cut it into wedges.
Baking
- Place the scone wedges onto the prepared baking sheet, spacing them apart. Bake for approximately 15-20 minutes, or until golden brown.
Glazing
- While the scones are cooling, whisk together powdered sugar, maple syrup, and 1-2 tablespoons of milk until smooth.
- Drizzle the maple glaze over the cooled scones.
Notes
Store in an airtight container at room temperature for up to 2 days. Unbaked scones can be frozen for up to a month. Bake from frozen, adding a couple of extra minutes to the baking time.
