Ingredients

Dough Ingredients
  • 1 cup all-purpose flour For the dough base
  • 1/4 cup unsalted butter, chilled and diced Keep butter cold for a flaky texture
  • 1/4 cup sugar For sweetness in the dough
  • 1/4 tsp salt To enhance flavors
  • 1-2 tbsp cold water Add as needed to form the dough
Filling Ingredients
  • 1 cup apple filling (cooked apples, cinnamon, sugar) Homemade apple filling with spices
  • 1 unit egg Beaten, for egg wash
  • Powdered sugar For icing on top

Method

Preparation
  1. In a mixing bowl, combine the flour, sugar, and salt. Add the chilled and diced butter and mix until resembling coarse crumbs.
  2. Gradually add cold water, one tablespoon at a time, until the dough comes together. It should be slightly sticky but not wet.
  3. Form the dough into a disc, wrap it in plastic, and refrigerate for about 15-20 minutes.
  4. While the dough chills, prepare your apple filling by cooking peeled and chopped apples with cinnamon and sugar until tender.
  5. Preheat the oven to 375°F (190°C). Roll out the dough to about 1/4-inch thick on a floured surface and cut into rectangles (approximately 3x4 inches).
Assembly and Baking
  1. Place a spoonful of apple filling in the center of half the rectangles.
  2. Fold the remaining rectangles on top and seal the edges with a fork. Brush with the beaten egg for a golden finish.
  3. Place assembled pop tarts on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper and bake for 20-25 minutes, or until golden brown.
  4. Allow them to cool slightly, then drizzle with powdered sugar icing if desired.

Notes

Store in an airtight container at room temperature for up to three days or freeze for up to a month. To reheat, bake at 350°F (175°C) for 10-15 minutes.
