Ingredients

Main Ingredients
  • 6 cups apples, peeled, cored, and sliced (Granny Smith or Honeycrisp work best)
  • 3/4 cup granulated sugar
  • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 1/4 teaspoon ground nutmeg
  • 1 tablespoon fresh lemon juice
  • 2 tablespoons unsalted butter (or Halal-friendly margarine)
  • 2 tablespoons all-purpose flour

Method

Preparation
  1. Start by peeling, coring, and slicing your apples. Aim for uniformly sized pieces to ensure even cooking.
  2. In a large bowl, mix the sliced apples with sugar, cinnamon, nutmeg, and lemon juice. Toss well until the apples are thoroughly coated in the mixture.
  3. In a large saucepan over medium heat, melt the butter. Once melted, add the apple mixture and cook for about 10 minutes, stirring occasionally. You want the apples to soften but not become mushy.
  4. Sprinkle the flour over the apple mix and stir to combine. Cook for another 2-3 minutes until the filling starts to thicken.
  5. Remove from heat and let the filling cool before using it in your choice of pie, dessert, or breakfast staple!

Notes

For best results, use a mix of tart and sweet apples. Store in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 5 days, or freeze for up to 3 months.
