Method
Preparation of Dough
- In a large bowl, mix the warm milk, melted butter, and 1/4 cup sugar. Sprinkle the yeast on top and let it sit for about 5 minutes until it becomes frothy.
- Add the egg, 1 cup of flour, cinnamon, and salt. Mix until combined.
Kneading and Rising
- Gradually add the remaining flour, 1/2 cup at a time, until a soft dough forms.
- On a floured surface, knead the dough for about 5-7 minutes until smooth and elastic.
- Place the dough in a greased bowl, cover it with a towel, and let it rise in a warm place for about 1 hour or until doubled in size.
Preparing the Filling
- While the dough rises, combine the diced apples, lemon juice, vanilla extract, nutmeg, and brown sugar in a bowl. Set aside to marinate.
Assembling the Rolls
- After the dough has risen, punch it down and roll it out into a rectangle about 1/4-inch thick.
- Spread the apple mixture evenly over the rolled-out dough.
- Starting from one edge, carefully roll the dough tightly into a log and pinch the seams to seal.
- Slice the log into 12 equal pieces and place them in a greased baking dish.
- Cover the dish with a towel and let the rolls rise for an additional 30 minutes, until puffy.
- Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C).
Baking
- Bake for 25-30 minutes, or until golden brown.
Preparing the Icing
- Whisk together the powdered sugar and 1-2 tablespoons of milk to achieve a smooth glaze.
Serving
- Drizzle the icing over the warm rolls and serve immediately to your eager family and friends!
Notes
You can swap out all-purpose flour for whole wheat flour for a healthier twist. Allow your dough to rise in a warm environment for best results.
