Ingredients

Dry Ingredients
  • 2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1/2 cup sugar
  • 2 teaspoons baking powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1 teaspoon cinnamon
Wet Ingredients
  • 1/2 cup unsalted butter, cold and cubed
  • 1/2 cup milk
  • 1 large egg, beaten
Filling
  • 1 cup chopped apples Fresh or your choice of apples

Method

Preparation
  1. Preheat your oven to 400°F (200°C).
  2. In a large mixing bowl, combine the flour, sugar, baking powder, salt, and cinnamon. Stir well to combine.
  3. Add the cold, cubed butter into the dry mixture. Using a pastry cutter or your fingers, mix until the texture resembles coarse crumbs.
  4. In a separate bowl, whisk together the milk and beaten egg. Pour this into your dry ingredients and stir just until combined, avoiding overmixing.
  5. Gently fold in the chopped apples until evenly distributed.
  6. Turn the dough onto a lightly floured surface. Pat it into a circle about 1 to 1.5 inches thick. Cut into wedges or use biscuit cutters for classic shapes.
Baking
  1. Place the scones onto a parchment-lined baking sheet and brush the tops with a little extra beaten egg.
  2. Bake in the preheated oven for 15-20 minutes or until golden brown.
  3. Let them cool on a wire rack for a few minutes before serving.

Notes

For a Halal-friendly version, use plant-based butter and almond milk. Work quickly with the butter to ensure flakiness. Avoid overmixing the dough.
