Ingredients

Main Ingredients
  • 4 slices thick bread such as sourdough or challah
  • 2 pieces eggs
  • ½ cup milk
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract
  • ½ tsp ground cinnamon
  • 1 piece apple peeled, cored, and sliced thinly
  • 1 tbsp sugar optional, depending on the sweetness of apples
  • Butter or oil for frying
Toppings
  • Maple syrup for serving
  • Whipped cream for serving
  • Powdered sugar for serving

Method

Preparation
  1. Preheat a non-stick skillet or griddle over medium heat.
  2. In a bowl, whisk together the eggs, milk, vanilla extract, and ground cinnamon.
  3. Dip each slice of bread into the egg mixture, allowing it to soak on both sides.
  4. In the heated pan, add a little butter or oil, then toss the sliced apples and sprinkle with sugar and cinnamon.
  5. Sauté the apples for about 2-3 minutes until slightly softened.
  6. Cook the soaked bread slices until golden brown, about 3-4 minutes on each side.
  7. Serve the French toast warm with caramelized apples on top, drizzle with maple syrup, or add whipped cream and powdered sugar.

Notes

Customize your apples for flavor; Granny Smith adds tartness while Honeycrisp offers sweetness. You can make the egg mixture ahead of time for quicker morning preparation.
