  • 1 sheet sheet of pastry dough (store-bought or homemade)
For the Filling
  • 1 cup apple butter Feel free to customize with spices like cinnamon or nutmeg.
  • 1 large egg, beaten For egg wash.
For the Icing
  • powdered sugar For icing.
  • milk For icing.

Method
 

Preparation
  1. Preheat your oven to 400°F (200°C).
  2. On a lightly floured surface, roll out your pastry dough to a 1/8 inch thickness.
  3. Cut the dough into rectangles about 3 x 4 inches in size.
Assembly
  1. Place a tablespoon of apple butter in the center of half of the rectangles, leaving space around the edges.
  2. Brush the edges with the beaten egg wash and top with another rectangle of dough, pressing down to seal.
  3. Crimp the edges with a fork for a decorative finish.
Baking
  1. Place the filled pop tarts on a parchment-lined baking sheet and make small cuts in the tops.
  2. Bake in the preheated oven for about 15-20 minutes or until golden brown.
Icing
  1. While cooling, whisk together powdered sugar and milk to your desired icing consistency.
  2. Drizzle icing over the cooled pop tarts.

Notes

Store baked pop tarts in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 5 days, or freeze for up to a month. Reheat in a toaster oven or conventional oven for best results.
